Yellow Lounge - Classical goes club.  For several years Deutsche Gramophone has been sponsoring this event, a way to get the hipsters to connect with classical music. The next event is in the infamous Berghain club on Tuesday October 7th, including DJs, live music, and a light show.

The Tilsiter Lichtspiele theater is something I’ve been hearing about for a while, but I haven’t made it there yet. It’s an old theatre in Friederichshain that shows art movies and various funky things.  At the moment, they have a retrospective of (West) German director Roland Klink, who I had never heard of, but apparently his films are 70’s gritty and good - heist films, fading rock starts, and Dennis Hopper.

Popkomm kommt!  October 8-10.  There’s a conference part at the evil ICC Messe (aka the Deathstar) but the more important part is all the concerts.  This year’s partner is Turkey, so that should be interesting. And popular.  It’s a chance to see lots of bands (you mostly never heard of) from all around the world. This year I think I’m going to pick a few just based on silly names and check them out.  Official blurb: “The Popkomm Festival takes place at 25 official locations throughout Berlin and features over 400 acts from 35 countries – making it the most international music industry gathering in Europe. Styles represented at the Popkomm range all the way from Rock, Pop, Hip Hop and Chansons to Classical, Punk and Electronica.”

Did you know that the Wasserturm in Prenzlauer Berg is the seemingly permanent home of sound art in Berlin? The current exhibition from Singuhr is in parts boring, terrifying, and riveting.  The best elements are works from UDK students.  I can only imagine how creepy it will be down in these underground water reservoirs when the exhibit stays open until midnight September 14.

Get crafty, Berlin! There’s a DaWanda event on September 20th for those who like to do it themselves. If you don’t know DaWanda, go check it out. It’s sort of the Euro-Etsy.

Acclaimed mafia drama Gomorrha, based on Roberto Saviano’s Bestseller, is now in a Kino near you.  Choices seem to be dubbed into German or in the original Italian with German subtitles - Hackesche Höfe has this option. I wanna go!

(photo by me) Cooking classes at the Volkhochschule. Lecker!
Think of the German possibilities.  The VHS is offering 3-hour cooking classes starting at 10€, including Bistro Cooking, Delicacies without Fish or Meat, Fall Gourmet, and Southern Cooking (probably without the grits and collard greens)
